Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Breaking the Spine to let us share our excitement for books coming out soon.
OK, it’s not Winds of Winter, and not a typical “waiting on” choice. And I’m not sure if I’ll enjoy the historical take as much as I enjoy the books (OK, I’m certain I won’t). But I am still really looking forward to getting my hands on more information and history for the world. And illustrations! And maps! Yes, please. Looks like something good to bide my time until WoW.
The World of Ice & Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and The Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin, Elio M. Garcia and Linda AntonssonExpected Publication: October 28th, 2014
THE NEVER-BEFORE-SEEN HISTORY OF WESTEROS AND THE LANDS BEYOND • WITH HUNDREDS OF PAGES OF ALL-NEW MATERIAL FROM GEORGE R. R. MARTIN
If the past is prologue, then George R. R. Martin’s masterwork—the most inventive and entertaining fantasy saga of our time—warrants one hell of an introduction. At long last, it has arrived with The World of Ice & Fire.
This lavishly illustrated volume is a comprehensive history of the Seven Kingdoms, providing vividly constructed accounts of the epic battles, bitter rivalries, and daring rebellions that lead to the events of A Song of Ice and Fire and HBO’s Game of Thrones. In a collaboration that’s been years in the making, Martin has teamed with Elio M. García, Jr., and Linda Antonsson, the founders of the renowned fan site Westeros.org—perhaps the only people who know this world almost as well as its visionary creator.
Collected here is all the accumulated knowledge, scholarly speculation, and inherited folk tales of maesters and septons, maegi and singers, including
• full-color artwork and maps, with more than 170 original pieces
• full family trees for Houses Stark, Lannister, and Targaryen
• in-depth explorations of the history and culture of Westeros
• 100% all-new material, more than half of which Martin wrote specifically for this bookIt is a chronicle which stretches from the Dawn Age to the Age of Heroes; from the Coming of the First Men to the arrival of Aegon the Conqueror; from Aegon’s establishment of the Iron Throne to Robert’s Rebellion and the fall of the Mad King, Aerys II Targaryen, which has set into motion the “present-day” struggles of the Starks, Lannisters, Baratheons, and Targaryens.
The definitive companion piece to George R. R. Martin’s dazzlingly conceived universe, The World of Ice and Fire is indeed proof that the pen is mightier than a storm of swords.
Ya… I think I will wait for Winds. Or maybe re-read the first 4 for the third time.

I can understand that. I think I mainly want it for the pictures 🙂 And no matter how great they may be, I don’t expect them to be able to compete with the actual books 🙂

Yeah, I think this is one for the shelf. I love these companion books. They’re great to just sit and flick through. I have spent hours looking at Tolkien companions and of course the Discworld one.
This looks really neat, I typically have a thing for any kind of “art book” even if they aren’t strictly art-related but more of a reference type volume. I’d get it just for the “lavishly illustrated” pages though, I have quite a collection of such informational books from video games, movies, etc.

Yes, the “lavishly illustrated” is what sold me.

Looks like it’ll be a great companion to the series.

Oh, I know! At least in the mean time, I have plenty of other books to read, but really looking forward to getting back to my favorite ASoIaF characters and stories!

I do love the Song of Ice and Fire series, and I’m sure you can never have too much information about that world. I’m still trying to catch up on the series though. Gotta finish A Dance with Dragons before the show starts back. Nice choice!
WOW

Don’t think of it as “catching up”, your just reading it closer to the next release 🙂

This sounds really interesting, especially if you’re a major fan of the series. I’ve read (and thoroughly enjoyed) them so far. Normally I wouldn’t buy the companion books because they don’t offer much that’s new, but this sounds like it could be very interesting and dare I say helpful in discovering some potential secrets that might impact the final books in the series? Either way, great pick!

Yeah, I was torn about a companion book. But, well, it’s ASoIaF, and I truly can’t get enough! Plus, “lavishly illustrated”!

Sounds like this sort of book is overdue for this series! I do like companion books that delve into the worlds of books, and I think this is going to be very popular.
