This time of year runs rampant with lists, which I love. I like to list out books that are coming out that anyone can jump into, books that are either first in a series or stand alone. Narrowing it down was hard, I tried to include variety and there are still many great books coming out that are not on my list (you can see my on-going list for 2015 releases here). So, here are my top 10 picks listed in order of expected release date:
Title: The City Stained Red
Author: Sam SykesExpected publication: January 27th, 2015 (NOTE: The Kindle edition is already available)Publisher: OrbitThe first book in a new trilogy from the acclaimed author of the Aeon’s Gate series.
A long-exiled living god arises.
A city begins to break apart at the seams.Lenk and his battle-scarred companions have come to Cier’Djaal in search of Miron Evanhands, a wealthy priest who contracted them to eradicate demons — and then vanished before paying for the job.
But hunting Miron down might be tougher than even these weary adventurers can handle as two unstoppable religious armies move towards all-out war, tensions rise within the capital’s cultural melting pot, and demons begin to pour from the shadows…
And Khoth Kapira, the long-banished living god, has seen his chance to return and regain dominion over the world.
Now all that prevents the city from tearing itself apart in carnage are Lenk, Kataria, a savage human-hating warrior, Denaos, a dangerous rogue, Asper, a healer priestess, Dreadaeleon, a young wizard, and Gariath, one of the last of the dragonmen.
Author: Elizabeth Bear
Expected Publication: February 3, 2015
Publisher: Tor
“You ain’t gonna like what I have to tell you, but I’m gonna tell you anyway. See, my name is Karen Memery, like memory only spelt with an e, and I’m one of the girls what works in the Hôtel Mon Cherie on Amity Street. Hôtel has a little hat over the o like that. It’s French, so Beatrice tells me.”
Hugo-Award winning author Elizabeth Bear offers something new in Karen Memory, an absolutely entrancing steampunk novel set in Seattle in the late 19th century—an era when the town was called Rapid City, when the parts we now call Seattle Underground were the whole town (and still on the surface), when airships plied the trade routes bringing would-be miners heading up to the gold fields of Alaska, and steam-powered mechanicals stalked the waterfront. Karen is a “soiled dove,” a young woman on her own who is making the best of her orphaned state by working in Madame Damnable’s high-quality bordello. Through Karen’s eyes we get to know the other girls in the house—a resourceful group—and the poor and the powerful of the town. Trouble erupts into her world one night when a badly injured girl arrives at their door, seeking sanctuary, followed by the man who holds her indenture, who has a machine that can take over anyone’s mind and control their actions. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, the next night brings a body dumped in their rubbish heap—a streetwalker who has been brutally murdered.
Bear brings alive this Jack-the-Ripper-type story of the old west with the light touch of Karen’s own memorable voice, and a mesmerizing evocation of classic steam-powered science.
Title: A Darker Shade of Magic
Author: V.E. Schwab
Expected Publication: February 24th, 2015
Publisher: Tor
From V.E. Schwab, the critically acclaimed author of Vicious, comes a new universe of daring adventure, thrilling power, and parallel Londons, beginning with A Darker Shade of Magic.
Kell is one of the last Travelers—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universes—as such, he can choose where he lands.
There’s Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there’s Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne—a place where people fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London…but no one speaks of that now.
Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see—a dangerous hobby, and one that has set him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations, who first robs him, then saves him from a dangerous enemy, and then forces him to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.
But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive—and that is proving trickier than they hoped.

Title: Uprooted

Title: The Fireman
Author: Joe Hill
Expected Publication: December 1, 2015 (via Amazon.uk, nothing official)
Publisher: Orion
I heard about this one quite a while ago, but unfortunately there has still not been anything official. Orion’s website shows expected publication in August 2014, so that’s obviously not happening (it came and went with no book or update). But, it’s Joe Hill, so it’s on my list even if there is nothing concrete.
Awesome list! I already have about half of these on my TBR, but I added a few more, thanks to you! Karen Memory sounds sooo good, and I’m also adding City Stained Red. I think 2015 is going to be awesome for books!

Karen Memory and Dinosaur Lords both look fantastic. I did my most anticipated fantasy reads last week, and will be covering sci-fi this week. I suspect we’ll have a few in common. 🙂

Those Above looks pretty good! I was wondering why I hadn’t heard about it and then I see it’s a UK release. Hoping we’ll get a US date, but as usual I’m not going to hold my breath.
I was tempted by Clash of Eagles when I saw it on NetGalley…did you happen to request?

Some of these are on my list as well.
The one I’m most excited about, though, is _Half-Resurrection Blues_ by Daniel Jose Older.
Ooo some of these I totally didn’t know about – THOSE ABOVE especially. I adored Daniel Polansky’s LOWTOWN a few years ago so I will definitely be snatching this one up!
