Friday Firsts is a new meme that will run every Friday here on Tenacious Reader. It will feature the first few sentences/paragraph of my current book and my first impressions as well. It’s meant to be a quick and easy way to share a bit about what I am reading, and I would love to hear others join in sharing their current reads as well.
A Veil of Spears (The Song of the Shattered Sands, #3) by Bradley P. Beaulieu

Çeda knelt in a cavern beside a pool of water, deep beneath the desert’s surface. The cavern’s darkness enveloped her, as did the chill air. It smelled clean here, unsullied, a place that might have remained hidden throughout all the history of the Kings of Sharakhai, perhaps longer. In her hands she held a thick, golden bracelet. She turned it over, again and again, feeling its weight, touching the oval stone, roughing her skin against the intricate designs worked into the gold.
“Speak to me,” she said. “This time, speak to me.”
The echoes went on and on.
The bracelet had once belonged to King Mesut, the Jackal King, but now it served as an indictment of all the Kings and even of the gods themselves. It was not the band itself that provided evidence of their treachery, but the onyx stone. Even now she could feel the souls of the seventeen dead asirim within it, clamoring for freedom, pleading for their release. Çeda was desperate to give it to them, but after six weeks of trying she still had no idea how.
My First Impressions
I’ve really enjoyed the other books in this series quite a bit, so I’m excited to return. I have to admit, as much as I really enjoyed the other books, I also feel like I remember very little in the way of details. Thankfully there seems to be good recap included in the story to help refresh my memory as I read!
What are you reading right now? Did it start out strong? Feel free to share in the comments, and also feel free to link up!
I’m reading Impostor Syndrome by Mishell Baker, and I have to admit it was a struggle in the beginning. It literally starts immediately after book 2 with no recap at all. I’m finally into the story so we’ll see?

I’m still reading Assassin’s Quest by Robin Hobb. Actually enjoying this one a lot more than the first two so far, and it did start off really strong imo. Epic always takes me forever to get through though so I’m a bit annoyed that my reading has slowed down, lol.

I loved the first two books in this series, so I need to track down this one – thank you for sharing:))
These books have actually been in my list for quite a while and I’d completely forgotten about them! I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this one! 😀

The previous book ended on a big cliffhanger, so I’m beyond curious to see how the author will wrap up the story here. Not long to wait now… 🙂

Recaps are so useful in epic fantasy – I wish all books had them tbh.

I’ve only read Twelve Kings in Sharakhai but plan on catching up on this great series. Ceda is such a fierce heroine to follow. I hope you enjoy this one just as much!!
