This is another fun volume in the Saga series. I felt like it was maybe a little slower than the other two, but not in a bad way. They start with a quest to find romance novelist D. Oswald Heist. Why? Because evidently his books carry a much deeper meaning for careful readers. One that leads them to believe that the author will be able to help them.
I like Heist, a recluse author with a jaded attitude and a good dose of wit (as seen in the included panel, that I thought some fellow reviewers may appreciate). He also accidentally anoints Hazel in a rather unorthodox and some what disgusting way. But he makes up for it by teaching her the actual message to be found in all good children’s stories! And it’s a good one!
We also get a more of Gwendolyn and Slave Girl, rounding out their characters. Gwnedolyn is no longer just a psycho ex-girlfriend, but a person. I love all the scenes with both her and Slave Girl (who is given a new name in this).
There’s no Fard, no Sextillion and very little Prince Robot IV, so there were no moments of looking back to see if I could unsee, but I have to check it again moments. Well, I guess that is mainly just Fard, but the lack of the others also means there’s less “adult” content that could scar my children if they caught me reading it. Neither good or bad, just an observation.
And one of the most important parts of this, we did find out what the opposite of war is, compliments of Prince Robot IV!
I just finished this over the weekend. It is a bit toned down compared to the first two volumes, but there were some funny lines that had me laughing out loud. And honestly, this volume deepened my love for Lying Cat. I just want one. I’m tempted to read the next issues before it releases as volume four ( I don’t know when that will be), but I’m not sure if I want to pay for it twice since I know I’ll buy volume four in the end. I LOVE Lying Cat! 🙂 I’ll probably hold off for the next full volume, I might get more antsy if I read it small installments 🙂

I loved how Gwendolyn was fleshed out as well. It’ll be interesting to see where her storyline goes. I seriously love this series so far.

D’oh, remember how in your review of Saga Vol. 2 I think I said I still have Vol. 3 still sitting on top of my dresser still waiting to be read? Yeah, still there, still unread. I don’t know why, since this is such a great comic and it’s just a slim volume. Maybe I need Vol. 4 to be out to get me cracking on this.

Ha! Well, mine was a library book and someone put it a Hold on it so I couldn’t renew it. Had to read 🙂 But, you still have it left to save as a treat for an otherwise yucky or humdrum day

Lucky. My library only has volume 1 and I don’t really dig comics enough to actually buy them. So I wait.

I didn’t read your review because as you know I just finished Vol. 2 and I hope to read 3 soon! BUT the illustration that you included is awesome, and a big part of why I love Alana. She’s a badass lady heroine who fangirls over books. Awesome!! My hopes for Vol. 3 include more Gwendolyn and more of Hazel’s narration – love ’em both.

I just finished reading Volume 1 not too long ago and picked up Volume 2 at the library a few days ago, but I still haven’t read it (currently reading a different comic).
Doesn’t look like I’ll be reading Volume 3 anytime soon though, it has like fifty holds at my library T_T
