Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Breaking the Spine to let us share our excitement for books coming out soon.
I have heard wonderful things about Jo Walton’s other books. I still need to read Among Others, but I saw The Just City that is coming out in January and am really looking forward to reading it.
The Just City by Jo Walton
Expected Publication: January 13th 2015 by Tor Books
“Here in the Just City you will become your best selves. You will learn and grow and strive to be excellent.”
Created as an experiment by the time-traveling goddess Pallas Athene, the Just City is a planned community, populated by over ten thousand children and a few hundred adult teachers from all eras of history, along with some handy robots from the far human future—all set down together on a Mediterranean island in the distant past. The student Simmea, born an Egyptian farmer’s daughter sometime between 500 and 1000 A.D, is a brilliant child, eager for knowledge, ready to strive to be her best self. The teacher Maia was once Ethel, a young Victorian lady of much learning and few prospects, who prayed to Pallas Athene in an unguarded moment during a trip to Rome—and, in an instant, found herself in the Just City with grey-eyed Athene standing unmistakably before her.
Meanwhile, Apollo—stunned by the realization that there are things mortals understand better than he does—has arranged to live a human life, and has come to the City as one of the children. He knows his true identity, and conceals it from his peers. For this lifetime, he is prone to all the troubles of being human.
Then, a few years in, Sokrates arrives—the same Sokrates recorded by Plato himself—to ask all the troublesome questions you would expect. What happens next is a tale only the brilliant Jo Walton could tell.
I spotted that one on NetGalley or Edelweiss the other day. It’s definitely original, and I’m curious as to what happens next.
Here’s my WOW

Yep, I’ve not read any of her books, but have heard really good things.

I keep trying to get excited about this one. So far I just can’t figure out if the premise is one I am interested in.

I have to admit, if I hadn’t heard so much about the author and had her on my “must try” list, I’m not certain the book would have the same level of appeal to me. It feels like it could go either way, but with the authors reputation, decided to go with it.

This sounds crazy and a little confusing…But I have heard good things about the author, so maybe crazy and confusing are good in this case!

Will be curious to see how it pans out 🙂 Sometimes different (and crazy) are what can set apart a book from others in a really good way. All depends on execution.

Yeah, I spotted this one on NG as well and had to hold myself back. I have two of Jo Walton’s books sitting on my shelf still waiting to be read before I can justify grabbing another book by her!

I would be the same way. I’ve heard really good things about Among Others, if I already had that one, I would likely not have picked this one up either.

I also like the look of this – or maybe it’s just the line ‘Then, a few years in, Sokrates arrives…’ (to ask all the troublesome questions!) that really appealed to me. I really don’t know what to make of it but I quite like that!
