Waiting on Wednesday is a meme hosted by Breaking the Spine to let us share our excitement for books coming out soon.
I loved Touch, and have been looking out for a new book by Claire North. This series of novellas sounds exciting! I mean, gambling by playing real Capture the Castle! I’ll be honest, the description reminds me a bit of Player of Games by Iain Banks, but instead of space, it has castles and kings, and it also has a female protagonist, which is great! I enjoy male protagonists, but have to admit to getting a bit of an extra thrill when its a woman that is the center of every thing (and excelling at it).
Title: The Serpent (The Gameshouse 1)
Author: Claire North
Expected publication: November 3, 2105
Publisher: Orbit
In 17th Century Venice exists a mysterious establishment known only as the Gameshouse.
There, fortunes are made and fortunes are broken over games of chess, backgammon and every other game under the sun.
But those whom fortune favours may be invited to compete in the higher league . . . a league where the games played are of politics and empires, of economics and kings. It is a league where Capture the Castle involves real castles, where hide and seek takes place on a scale as big as the British Isles.
Not everyone proves worthy of competing in the higher league. But one woman, who is about to play, may just exceed everyone’s expectations.
Though she must always remember: the higher the stakes, the more deadly the rules . . .
Hmm, not so sure about this one. A bit of an odd premise, so I’ll likely have to wait for a few initial review before I decide whether it’s worth diving into.

I can understand that. I actually could finish The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August because I could never accept the premise of the book. Felt like a strange lifetime long Ground Hog Day to me. But I absolutely loved Touch when I gave it a shot. Think I was a little hesitant about that one as well because the premise sounded like it could go either way for me, but I felt she did a fantastic job with it. Hoping this one falls more along the lines of Touch for me.

All three Gamehouse books are coming out together on the same day too, I believe! Which is great, because if the first novella proves to short at least I know there are two more I can jump into right away 🙂

Gamehouse sounds really cool, and I remember I liked your review of Player of Games. I’ll look a review of this one! Also like that this will be a series of novellas! Blame Tor.com, but really liking novellas lately.

Fantasy novels set in Venice are almost always a win for me. I feel pretty torn about novellas – sometimes they’re amazing and others, not so much. But Tor.com has swayed me towards reading more novellas, so maybe I’ll give this one a go. I could always use another short and sweet read!
