I got this large set of books from the very generous people at Ace/Roc as part of the Ace Roc Stars program. Honestly, I think I am most excited about the debut novel, Admiral by Sean Danker which is a new military SF. Also very happy to have received the first in series to two books we received previously: Maplecroft by Cherie Priest, which is supposed to be good and creepy, as well as Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris, which I just heard is being made in to a TV series. Since her Sookie Stackhouse books were the basis for HBO’s True Blood, I’m pretty curious to check it out. Also in the box was Midnight Taxi Tango by Daniel Jose Older, The Last Dream Keeper by Amber Benson, Thunderbird by Jack McDevitt, A Kiss Before the Apocalypse by Thomas E. Sniegoski. I’m very grateful for all these addition to my reading list, so a huge thank you to Ace/Roc!

I also got a very exciting box from Orbit with two books on my Must Read list for the fall.

Black Wolves by Kate Elliot (finished Copy) – I started this one the day it showed up, and so far, there’s no disappointment. In fact, I’m kind of rushing through this post so I can start reading it again. I’ve never read anything by Kate Elliot before, but so far , I suspect I may have to revisit her previously published works.

Angel of Storms by Trudi Canavan (finished Copy) – I’ll be honest, I found the Black Magician trilogy to be a fun read, but not much more. However the first book in this series really stuck with me and I have been so curious what happens next. So happy to have a copy in hand so I can start on it soon (after Black Wolves).

A huge thank you to Orbit for sending these books my way!

Dead Ringers by Christopher Golden (eBook) – I always like finding some horror books to read, as that is really the first genre that I loved. I’ve read Snowblind by Golden and enjoyed it, and am very curious about this with body doubles showing up! I’m hoping to get to it sometime soon as it has been a while since I have read a horror book. A huge thank to you St. Martin’s Press for the review copy.

The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle (eBook) – This was from the extremely generous people at Tor.com! I have enjoyed the novellas I have read from them so far, and am looking forward to checking out more!

I also received two audiobooks for review from Audible Studios: The Flux by Ferrett Steinmetz (Audiobook) and Tower of Thorns (Audiobook) by Juliet Marillier. These are both books I thought I would have found time to read by now, so am very excited to get the audio versions as that typically makes it easier to fit into my reading schedule. Thanks to Audible Studios!

Half Resurrection Blues by Daniel Jose Older – This is the first in series for one of the books I received in my Ace Roc Stars box. When I saw it on Audible’s Hidden Gems sale for just $3.95, I decided to sweep it up! Looking forward to checking it out!

So, what have you acquired recently? And who wants to help me pick what to read next out of these books?!? I’m a bit overwhelmed with awesome additions this time!!

  1. YAY for Tower of Thorns! I hope the audiobook will be just as awesome.

And I have gained a deeper appreciation for the cover of Slade House after seeing your photo. I admit I thought it was hideous and boring when I first saw it, but wow, looks like there’s something going on there that gets lost in translation in a 2D image. Does it like, have its own slip cover? Is that how it has that “frame” effect?

    1. The listened to the audio for Dreamer’s Pool, so am feeling pretty good about the audio of this one. Slade House did come with a slipcover, but its just the black frame around the outside that you see in the one picture. I do like the cover though 🙂

  2. I saw that you had started Black Wolves on Goodreads, and it seems you’re liking so far! I think I’m to an author event with Christopher Golden and James A. Moore next week. I don’t know anything of Dead Ringer, but I remember Snowblind coming out last year.

    1. I am really enjoying it! (headed back to it as soon as I get off this computer). I enjoyed Snowblind, and it is one of the books that sticks with me more than others, so really looking forward to reading Dead Ringers!
