Friday Firsts is a new meme that will run every Friday here on Tenacious Reader. It will feature the first few sentences/paragraph of my current book and my first impressions as well. It’s meant to be a quick and easy way to share a bit about what I am reading, and I would love to hear others join in sharing their current reads as well.

“The Germans were flanking us at Delville Wood when I died.”
Ginger Stuyvesant had a dim awareness of her body repeating the soldier’s words to the team’s stenographer. She tried to hold that awareness at bay, along with the dozens of other spirit circles working for the British Army. Even with a full circle supporting her, she ached with fatigue, and if she weren’t careful that would pull her back into her body. It wouldn’t be fair to force Helen to assume control of the circle early. The other medium was just as exhausted. Around them, the currents of the spirit world swirled in slow spirals. Past events brushed her in eddies of remembrance. Caught in those memories, scent and colour floated with thick emotion. The fighting at the Somme had kept the entire Spirit Corps working extra shifts trying to take reports from the dead, and the air was frigid with souls.

My First Impressions
I’m definitely intrigued. The concept of being able to interview fallen soldiers immediately after their death is a very interesting way to gather intelligence on the enemy. I feel like I already have theories forming for ways it could be used and am curious to see if any of them play out in the book.

This does look really good and I love your choice this week. A good place to start with this author I think.

Amazingly creative hook. I just finished reading about the Battle of Somme though, so this really intrigues me. With 1 million casualties in this 141 day battle, they would definitely have to work overtime.

As an admirer of Ms. Kowal’s work I’m very much looking forward to this one, and the beginning seems more than promising! 🙂

It’s my first book by her, but likely not the last!

I’ve had my eye on this book since I came across it a few months ago!
I am definitely going to recommend it (unless something goes horribly wrong in the second half of the book. But I doubt that)
