Friday Firsts is a new meme that will run every Friday here on Tenacious Reader. It will feature the first few sentences/paragraph of my current book and my first impressions as well. It’s meant to be a quick and easy way to share a bit about what I am reading, and I would love to hear others join in sharing their current reads as well.
All that remained where a face that had once been was a gruesome mess of flesh, bone, and hair. The rest of his body was no better. Satrine Rainey was astounded it was still recognizable as a man.
She was also astounded how, after two months as an Inspector Third Class in the Constabulary of the city of Maradain, she had grown accustomed to sights like this. Too many of her case assignments involved dead bodies, and Captain Cinellan still delighted in assigning, in his words, the “strange ones” to her and her partner, Minox Welling.
My First Impressions
heh … well, for some reason I didn’t expect this one to start straight with gore. 🙂 Out of Maresca’s two series, I have preferred the one centered around the magic school better than the detective one, but that’s to be expected as that is my general preference with stories. I was quickly reminded how much I enjoyed Satrine Rainey’s character in the first book and am excited to get back with the story, see what happens next.
What are you reading right now? Did it start out strong? Feel free to share in the comments, and also feel free to link up!
Actually I kinda wish the story had continued with the gruesome murder, the actual case they’re on is turning out to be pretty confusing 🙂

I love that cover – I haven’t read any of these but I’m definitely intrigued. What’s the best place to start?

I would start with The Thorn of Dentonhill. I honestly prefer that series, because in general I don’t tend to enjoy detective/mystery stories as much. (I think Mogsy prefers this series)

I’m with Lynn – I haven’t read either of Maresca’s series, which one do you think is the better jumping-off point? Personally, I’m equally intrigued by magic school and magical detectives!
