Friday Firsts is a new meme that will run every Friday here on Tenacious Reader. It will feature the first few sentences/paragraph of my current book and my first impressions as well. It’s meant to be a quick and easy way to share a bit about what I am reading, and I would love to hear others join in sharing their current reads as well.
Day 1
July 25, 2493
Sound struggled to make its way through the thick synth-amneo fluid. Once it reached Maria Arena’s ears, it sounded like a chain saw: loud, insistent, and unending. She couldn’t make out the words, but it didn’t sound like a situation she wanted to be involved in.
Her reluctance at her own rebirth reminded her where she was, and who she was. She grasped for her last backup. The crew had just moved into their quarters on the Dormire, and the cloning bay had been the last room they’d visited on their tour. There they had done their first backup on the ship.
Maria must have been in an accident or something soon after, killing her and requiring her next clone to wake. Sloppy use of a life wouldn’t make a good impression on the captain, who likely was the source of the angry chain-saw noise.
Maria finally opened her eyes.

My First Impressions
I’m curious. I have read a number of books lately that seem to start with this same premise of waking and not sure what is going on, but so far this one seems to be handling it better.
What are you reading right now? Did it start out strong? Feel free to share in the comments, and also feel free to link up!
This book has been stalking me. And you are all blogging about it xD one day…

It’s awesome, Lisa, that’s all I can say. It has a completely different premise than those other books.

You know, now that you mention it there really have been an awful lot of books with the “waking up and not remembering anything” premise lately! I wonder if it showed up on the publishing trends forecast or something, hahaha.

It feels like maybe it should have! Or they need to hire new forecasters 😉

It does seem like an overused premise these days, doesn’t it? I can think of two off the top of my head now, Alive by Scott Sigler and Admiral by Sean Danker. Nonetheless, I’m very excited about this one.

Yep, those two sprang to mind immediately
