Stacking the Shelves – April 23, 2016

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly feature all about sharing your good luck in book acquisitions! So here’s what came my way since my last post!

I didn’t have a chance to get this post together last week, so there are SO MANY GREAT books to showcase this time!!

Received for Review

Children of Earth and Sky by Guy Gavriel Kay – I’ve loved the two books I’ve read by Kay, so this book was on my Must-Read list! Was very excited to get a copy. Many thanks to NAL!

The Summer Dragon by Todd Lockwood – I’ve already started this one and am really enjoying it. Strong female character, dragons! Oh and as added bonus, the author is an established illustrator and has wonderful images to along with the story! My thanks to DAW!

It Happened One Dooms Day by Laurence MacNaughton – This was a surprise arrival from Pyr. I have to confess, it may not be one I would normally have picked up, but sounds like it could be a fun read and sometimes I’m in the mood for that. Added bonus, the author’s profile says he writes books with deeply flawed characters. I tend to like that! Many thanks to Pyr for sending this my way!

Paper and Fire by Rachel Caine – Alright, Ink and Bone was one of my favorites from last year (and a very surprise one, it was a book not at all my radar). I am SO looking forward to this one!! I mean, forbidden books and such! I loved this story and so excited to continue. Many thanks to NAL!

The Suicide Motor Club by Christopher Buehlman – I loved both Between Two Fires and The Lesser Dead (two very different books). So I’m quite excited to check this newest book by Buehlman out. Many thanks to Berkley!

Sharp Ends by Joe Abercrombie – I may not be big on short stories generally, but I love the First Law books, so I’m very excited to read this. Many thanks to Hachette Audio for the review copy!

Fellside by M. R. Carey – I’ve actually already listened to this one (review). It was definitely different from The Girl with All the Gifts, but still very good! More thanks to Hachette Audio for this one!

Scourge of the Betrayer by Jeff Salyards – I have heard very high praise for this series and I received a review copy of the ebook from the author a couple of months ago, but I get to backlist books much quicker on audio. So I was thrilled when I was able to get a review copy from Audible Studios! Many thanks!!

And a couple more novellas for review from the wonderful people at Tor.com!!

Spiderlight by Adrian Tchaikovsky – I have wanted to read something by Tchaikovsky, and this may be a great chance! I really have heard wonderful things about his books and its about time I read one.

Pride’s Spell by Matt Wallace – I may be a bit less likely to read this one, I have a couple before I need to read, and I haven’t been sure of it. If I am in the mood for something out of the norm for me, I may give the first one a try.

Purchases

IMG_4511OK, not a book, but I couldn’t resist. Mainly because I’m so excited for the new season to start this weekend!!

  1. I landed a copy of Spiderlight this week a well – looks like an awesome read. Children of Earth and Sky is probably my most anticipated read of the year, so I’ll likely be starting in on that as soon as I’m done Saint’s Blood.

Anxious to see what you think of Scourge of the Betrayer. I wasn’t overly fond of the first book, but the second was fantastic, and the third even better.

  2. Enjoy! The only one of yours here which I’m reading is Paper and Fire. I already have it and want to read it. I always have so many things I want to read! I have things which are sooner out to read and review first. Anne

  3. I’m so glad you’re starting the Bloodsounders Arc series! Scourge of the Betrayer tends to be really divisive among the fanbase because the author holds a lot of the secrets tight to his vest, but I do hope you give book two a go right after, because that’s when BOOM EVERYTHING BECOMES CLEAR AND AWESOME. Seriously, I cannot stress hard enough not to give up after book 1!

  4. I really enjoyed the Salyard’s book – I still have No.2 and 3 to get to which I’m excited about. The first one is more about the journey than anything else and I really enjoyed that aspect. I thought it was a risk writing the book in the way he has but for me it paid off for sure and I’m looking forward to No.2 – which has all the rave reviews!
