Reading for me.

Well, its been quite a while.

So, if anyone is still around to see this, its been ages since I’ve posted. This was not really a conscious decision, and I always planned to return, I just never imagined it would take me so long. I think I fell into a phase where I started to feel (self inflicted) pressure to keep up to a certain number of posts, keep up with reading certain books, keep up with all the latest releases, news, blogs, etc. Keep up, keep up, keep up. It wound up taking what I started as a fun hobby to another thing in life to stress about. I found for a while I just stopped reading, feeling like I would need to also find time to review, then I ventured outside of my standard genres (I think for the same reason, I felt zero obligation to review the non-genre books), but have slowly found my way back, as I always imagined I would, it just took me longer to get there than I imagine.

Reading and blogging was always something that I WANTED to do, both things that I enjoy. So when I talk about the stress and pressure, it was all completely pressure I created for myself by setting goals that were not always easy for me to meet. So, on my return to this, I am setting no expectations for myself. I have no set goals for posts per week/month/etc. No set goals for when to review new releases, or even how many of my posts may be centered around new releases. I’m just planning to post when I read something and find I have something to say. I miss the blogs, I miss chatting with my book/blog friends, and hope to maybe find a happy balance that I may have missed before. I’ve been updating the look/feel of the blog, and while I have most of it, will likely still make some tweaks here and there. If you notice anything off, please let me know.

My latest reading trend is a return to what I would do in the early days (before blogging), where I would pick an author and basically read all of their books back to back. Reading completed series in a go is something I really enjoy, I forget less when I don’t have to wait a year to read the next one. So if you have any recommendations, let me know!

I asked for recommendation over on reddit, and these are the series I have added to my list so far: (

  • Codex Alera by Jim Butcher (I just finished the first book, and am enjoying it, will dive into the second one later today)
  • Scholomance by Naomi Novik
  • Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee

Series that I have completed recently, and may share some thoughts on the blog in the future. At least some of them will likely be one review for the entire series, so a little different. It can be especially hard to keep reviews completely spoiler free when you review them all at once and yet still feel like you can say everything you want to say, so I will see how it goes πŸ˜€

  • Summoner Series by Taran Marathu
  • Letters of Enchantment by Rebecca Ross
  • The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater
  • Court of Fives by Kate Elliot
  • Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas
  • A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas
  • Crescent City by Sarah J Maas

I would love to hear from some people! I’m definitely still looking to add to my TBR, especially any series that may have released in the last 5 years or so that are completed.

What series/authors/books should I add to my list?

Or just say Hi πŸ˜€

  1. Welcome back! I want to read that Jim Butcher and Fonda Lee series. I enjoyed the Naomi Novik one. I think you’ll want to read Heather Fawcett’s Emily Wilde books they’re lovely. I’m really enjoying my own Read-along of the White Trash Zombie series by Diana Rowland too.

    1. Thanks! I just added the Emily Wilde books to my TBR (and placed a hold at the library for the first one).

I really should revisit White Trash Zombie. I know I read several, but not all of them. They were really fun reads.

    1. Thanks!! I think my goal will be to have no goals πŸ˜€ And yeah, binge reading is pretty nice, and something I NEVER felt like I could do when committing to reviewing so many new releases. though, there are definitely some authors it does not work as well for, you start to notice some weaknesses (and re-use) that could easily miss reading the books a year apart.

  2. Welcome back! I’m glad you’ve found your way back into reading and blogging – lovely to see you πŸ˜€ I would add Marie Brennan (Memoirs of Lady Trent) to the list for the entertaining adventures of a naturalist in a world of dragons if you haven’t already read them, and Katherine Addison’s Goblin Emperor spin-off trilogy (although the last one isn’t out until later this year, so no rush!)

    1. Thanks!! Oh, I remember hearing about the Lady Trent books, but never got around to reading/trying them. Sounds like a good addition to my list. Thanks! (I read Goblin Emperor and am so in the minority as I didn’t care for it)

  3. Hey there. Welcome back. It’ll be so good to chat about books again and I love your idea of bingeing some series.
I’m on board with the no stress idea too. Last year I also had a break – related to family issues – but, it was good to come back and the time away definitely made me rethink a few things – I’m not so trigger happy with the ‘request’ button any more for example.

    1. Hello! Its good to be back, and back with no pressure, just doing things as I feel like it πŸ˜€ I’m really enjoying the binge reading that I never felt like I could do when I had so many books for review, not that I didnt really enjoy reading those as well, there’s just less expectations and pressure (even if it was self inflicted pressure) with what I am doing now. Definitely look forward to chatting books πŸ˜€

  4. Glad you escaped the trap of the hype train n new releases. It is very detrimental to a readers longterm enjoyment and stability.

Also, as an FYI, when I tried to visit your site using Chrome on my laptop I get a 500internal error.

    1. Thanks! I will see if I get sucked back in, but hopefully not.

And thanks about the error. It was actually one of my plugins that kept corrupting my htaccess file. I dont even know which one for sure. I disabled several things to get it to stop (I kept fixing it and it would get corrupted again …ughh πŸ˜€

  5. I know this is my first time commenting on your blog but I totally get why you took a break. Trying to fit everything in can be so hard at times. And I think reading what you most want to works best. Reading and blogging are both meant to be for fun, after all.

Ooh Scholomance and the Green Bone Saga are both on my TBR too. Actually so are several of your read ones, a few of which I really can’t believe I haven’t read yet πŸ™ˆ

Some completed series I’d recommend are The Cruel Prince and Wicked Lovely. Also The Final Strife which isn’t complete yet but the third and final book comes out this year so it almost is.

    1. Thanks for the recommendations, I was looking at The Cruel Prince the other day, so am hoping to include it in my binge reads πŸ˜€ Wicked Lovely is new to me, but just looked it up and am adding it to my list. Its so hard (well impossible), to keep up with everything, its enjoyable taking a different approach to what I am reading right now because its giving me the opportunity to read things I know I would never have read back when I was reviewing just because they were not new.

      1. I hope you enjoy both of them and I’m glad your new system is working out for you. It’s definitely impossible to keep up with everything, there are so many fascinating sounding books releasing all of the time but plenty of older books worth checking out too.
